Product Details

Nytol is a common, over the counter sleep aid distributed by GlaxoSmithKline. (They also make the sleep aid Sominex. Both contain the same active ingredient.)

Diphenhydramine is the active ingredient in Nytol. It is an antihistamine and is the same active ingredient in Bendaryl. Some people build a resistance to the effects of diphenhydramine after prolonged use.

Diphenhydramine is commonly associated with a feeling of drowsiness the following day after use.

The company's website offers very little information on the product.

It is available in QuickCaps or QuickGels.

Consumer Feedback

My Three Reasons For A Thumbs Down

1.Ineffective- I have found Nytol to be hit or miss at best when it comes to usefulness. I would say that I found it to be about 25% effective in inducing sleep within 1-2 hours, and about 40% effective in inducing sleep with 4 hours. I often had to wait at least 5 or 6 hours for it to fully kick in, and often sleep just never came. For my money, that's just not good enough. The best way to work around this limitation. Take the pill immediately following dinner, assuming you eat between 5 and 7 p.m., and if you're lucky you'll be ready for bed by midnight.

2.Groggy- Like many sleep aids, Nytol has the unwanted side effect of morning grogginess. From my point of view, the point of a sleep aid is to help you feel well rested and alert in the morning. Waking up with severe medicine head makes you almost as ineffective as if you hadn't slept at all. In fact, I do better tired than groggy.

3.Habit Forming- The more you use Nytol, the more you become dependent on it. I had a friend, we'll call her Julianna for lack of a better alias, that always used Nytol around the holidays, when her horrific family set her nerves on end. Soon she couldn't sleep without it, and once she went for a full month and a half consistently using the pills, 3 times the recommended maximum time span. I myself have found it quite difficult to just leave Nytol behind as well, and as such I find it more of a postponement of than a solution to insomnia.

At the time, I have to admit that I used this sleeping aid several times a week to induce sleep. I was concerned with the fact that I was becoming a habitual user. It was just so much easier to take these tablets than to try to fall asleep on my own and deal with the thoughts racing through my head. I continued using this product for several weeks until the day I experienced disturbing side effects from its usage. About 10 minutes after taking my usual dosage, I started to feel really agitated (a side effect listed on the label). My heart began beating very rapidly and I felt like I was going to faint. I was so scared that I almost picked up the phone to call for help (I don't suffer from any medical conditions that would trigger such a reaction). Thankfully, these side effects lasted less than 5 minutes but it was enough to stop me from ever taking this sleep aid again. As hard as it was, I had to attempt to fall asleep without the help of any over-the-counter medication. It took several days but I was finally relaxed enough to fall asleep on my own. A hot bath with fragrant salts and a "sound of nature" CD greatly helped me to achieve my goal.

I have never taken any sleep aids before but I got to the point of desperation for a good nights sleep. I don't like the idea of taking any drug to help me sleep and have a big fear of becoming addicted to these pills. But, like I said, I was desperate. I bought Nytol because it was the only brand I have heard of. I was greatly disappointed! I did not sleep any better than usual. In fact, worse. I woke up several times during the night, each time becoming more and more agitated that I had taken these pills and was still having a miserable nights sleep. I woke up with a sore throat and the biggest, darkest bags under my eyes yet and more tired than usual. I'll never buy Nytol again.
